Situational Report

SITREP — 16 September 2026

SAUDI ARABIA / YEMEN

  • Saudi Arabia accused the Houthis of an attempted drone attack on Mecca, saying it intercepted the drone before it entered the city’s airspace, and declared Mecca a “red line.” The Houthis denied it, saying their operations targeted Saudi oil facilities and military bases.
  • Regional condemnation followed but no offers of military support. Turkish and Pakistani officials said Riyadh has not requested assistance under the new Saudi–Turkey–Pakistan defence pact; the Turkish side said the alliance is not yet operational.
  • The Houthis later claimed shooting down a coalition F-15 over Marib, sharing video evidence that has been shared for the first time, no comment from KSA yet
  • The East-West pipeline remains shut, contradicting the US claim that flows would resume within days.

IRAN

  • The House passed a war powers resolution 220-204 late Tuesday, the third such vote, with seven Republicans in favour. It will not reach Trump’s desk.
  • CBO put the war’s cost at over $38bn as of 1 August, running $2–3bn monthly, and projected inflation 0.5 points higher than expected into 2027.
  • Araghchi visited China, with talks focused on the conflict and Hormuz shipping. Xi again offered Beijing’s mediation at the BRICS summit.
  • On 15 September the US said it destroyed two small Iranian boats attempting to seize a sea drone.

UKRAINE–RUSSIA

  • Ukraine’s military said it killed a Russian general in occupied Donetsk Oblast.
  • Partisans claimed sabotage at a Russian plant producing missile components.
  • Zelensky said Ukraine will halt strikes on Russian territory if allies can secure a credible Russian commitment to spare Ukrainian critical infrastructure — a direct response to Trump’s demand that Kyiv stop hitting diesel output.
